CERVICAL CONE EXCISION (LLETZ)

What is cone resection (LLETZ) and where is it performed?

A cone-shaped excision (LLETZ) is a procedure used to remove abnormal cervical tissue. The procedure involves the use of a thin, wire splinter and the use of an electric current to remove a small piece of tissue from the cervix. This tissue sample is sent to the pathology laboratory for examination to determine if abnormal cells are present. H LLETZ is commonly used to remove precancerous or cancerous cells in the cervix detected during a Pap test or colposcopy. It is also used for removal of abnormal cells that cause bleeding or other symptoms. The procedure is usually performed in a doctor's office or clinic, under local or general anesthesia, and usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete. After the procedure, patients may experience mild cramping, drip bleeding or vaginal discharge for several days to a week. It is important to carefully follow all of your doctor's instructions after the procedure to ensure proper healing and avoid potential complications.

What happens during a pinealectomy?

The procedure is usually performed in a doctor's office or clinic and usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete. See what usually happens during a pinealectomy:

  • Preparation: The patient will lie down on an examination table with her legs in a gynaecological examination position. The doctor will clean the cervix and apply a local anesthetic to numb the area.
  • Placement of the atrial septum expander: A vaginal dilator is inserted into the vagina to keep the vaginal walls apart and provide access to the cervix.
  • Removal of abnormal tissue: A thin, wire barb with an electric current is used to remove a small piece of tissue from the cervix. It is handled by the doctor and leaves healthy tissue intact.
  • Removal of tissue: The tissue is removed and sent to a laboratory for examination to determine if there are any abnormalities cells.
  • Hemostasis: After the abnormal tissue is removed, the doctor may use a similar tool to stop any bleeding.
  • Care after the procedure: The patient may experience mild cramping, droplet bleeding or vaginal discharge for several days to a week after the procedure. It is important to carefully follow all post-procedure instructions to ensure proper healing and avoid potential complications.

A cone-shaped excision (LLETZ) is generally safe and effective for removing abnormal cervical tissue. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects. Your doctor will discuss any potential risks or concerns with you before the procedure.
