Many women wonder if the disease has a hereditary basis, especially when there is a family history. In this article, we examine whether cervical cancer is hereditary, what the main risk factors are and how it can be effectively prevented.<\/p>\n<h3>What causes cervical cancer?<\/h3>\n<p>The main risk factor for cervical cancer is infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that is mainly transmitted through sexual contact. Certain strains of HPV, such as HPV-16 and HPV-18, are responsible for the majority of cases.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to HPV, additional risk factors include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>Immunosuppression (such as in patients with HIV or taking immunosuppressive drugs)<\/li>\n<li>Multiple or unprotected sexual activity<\/li>\n<li>The early onset of sexual life<\/li>\n<li>The absence of regular gynecological check-ups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Is cervical cancer hereditary?<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike other cancers, such as breast or ovarian, cervical cancer <strong>it is not considered hereditary.<\/strong> It is not transmitted through specific genetic mutations, such as those in genes <strong>BRCA1<\/strong> and <strong>BRCA2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, studies suggest that there may be <strong>genetic predisposition,<\/strong> that is, an inherited tendency of the body not to fight HPV effectively. If, for example, a woman has a mother or sister who has had the disease, her own risk may be increased \u2013 not due to a mutation, but due to a genetically determined inability of the immune system to deal with the virus.<\/p>\n<h3>How can we prevent cervical cancer?<\/h3>\n<p>Prevention plays a crucial role and is based on five pillars:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>HPV vaccination:<\/strong> The most effective method of prevention. It is recommended to be done before the start of sexual activity, for both girls and boys.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regular gynecological check-up:<\/strong> The Papanicolaou test (Pap test) and the HPV DNA test detect precancerous lesions or the presence of the virus in early stages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Precautions in sexual life:<\/strong> Using a condom reduces the risk, although it does not completely eliminate it, as HPV is also transmitted through skin-to-skin contact.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quitting smoking:<\/strong> Smoking reduces the effectiveness of the immune system in fighting HPV infections.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Healthy lifestyle:<\/strong> A balanced diet, regular exercise and stress reduction strengthen the body&#039;s natural defenses.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>Cervical cancer <strong>it is not hereditary<\/strong> in the strict sense, but there may be <strong>genetic predisposition<\/strong> which is related to the way the body reacts to HPV.
