SURGICAL TREATMENT OF CERVICAL CANCER

Cervical cancer is one of the most common gynecological cancers. However, when diagnosed early, it can be treated with excellent results.

Which surgical method is right for me?

The choice depends on factors such as:

  • the stage of the disease,
  • age and general health status,
  • the desire to preserve fertility.

The main surgical options include:

Cone resection (conization, loop):
Conservative technique where a small section of the cervix is removed. Suitable for very early lesions and ideal for preserving fertility.

• Radical trachelectomy:
The cervix and the tissue next to the cervix (parametrium) are removed while the uterus is preserved. It is recommended for women who desire future pregnancy, offering a balance between effectiveness and reproductive desire.

Hysterectomy:
The most common surgical option, which may be:

  • Simple: Removal of the uterus and cervix – indicated in early stages.
  • Radical: More extensive surgery, with removal of adjacent tissues (parametria) and lymph nodes – preferred in more advanced disease.
  • Lymph node cleansing:
It is performed to investigate possible lymph node spread. The sentinel lymph node technique allows for a targeted and less invasive approach.

Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery: The Future is Here

Technological advances are bringing revolutionary changes to gynecological oncology. Minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic and laparoscopic surgery, offer:

  • Much smaller incisions
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Improved aesthetic result
  • Reduced risk of complications

When performed by specialized gynecological oncologists, they offer high success rates with less burden on the body. In particular, cervical cancer requires appropriate patient selection because according to the latest data, open access is indicated for many women.

After Surgery – What Should I Watch Out For?

Recovery is just as important as the surgery itself. The woman needs:

  • Adequate rest and avoidance of intense fatigue
  • Continuous medical monitoring
  • Healthy diet, mild physical activity and psychological care

A cancer diagnosis is always a difficult experience. Support from doctors, family and friends is crucial for mental and physical recovery.
