Uterine curettage is a surgical procedure used to remove tissue from the uterus. The procedure involves dilating the cervix and then using a curette, which is a spoon-shaped instrument that scrapes and removes tissue from inside the uterus. Scraping may be performed for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It is commonly used to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine bleeding, including heavy periods, postmenopausal bleeding or bleeding between periods. The procedure may also be used to remove tissue remaining in the uterus after a miscarriage or to remove polyps from the uterus. Endometrial curettage is one of the most common procedures in women.
Scraping may be recommended by your doctor for a number of reasons, including:
The decision to have a curettage is made in consultation with the treating doctor, who will assess a woman's symptoms and medical history to determine if the procedure is necessary. As with any medical procedure, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits before undergoing the procedure.
The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia, although local anaesthesia may be used in some cases. After the procedure, a woman may experience cramping or light bleeding for a few days. Recovery time is usually short and most women can return to normal activities within a few days.
